ABOUT SOMERTON

Somerton is a powerhouse of Melbourne’s northern industrial corridor, located approximately 21 kilometres from the CBD.

Somerton is a primary industrial and logistics hub in Melbourne’s north, located approximately 21 kilometres from the CBD. Unlike the residential suburbs that surround it, Somerton is almost entirely dedicated to large-scale commerce and manufacturing, with a residential population of only six people recorded in the 2021 Census. It serves as a vital economic engine for the City of Hume, bounded by the Merri Creek to the east and the Craigieburn and North East railway lines to the west.

The landscape of Somerton is dominated by massive business and distribution parks, including the Austrak Business Park, Somerton Logistics Centre, and the Northgate Distribution Centre. These precincts house major national and international brands such as Coles, Mars, and Linfox. The suburb’s industrial identity was further cemented in late 2025 with the official opening of the Somerton Intermodal Terminal (SIT). This $400 million "dry port" allows freight to be moved via rail directly from the Port of Melbourne, effectively removing up to 500,000 truck trips from Victorian roads each year. This facility has transformed Somerton into the most significant logistics node in the northern corridor, offering businesses a faster and lower-carbon link to global markets.

Despite its heavy industrial focus, Somerton is bordered by the ecologically significant Merri Creek. This waterway provides a natural green buffer on the suburb's eastern edge and is home to threatened species such as the Growling Grass Frog. The Merri Creek Management Committee actively works to restore the surrounding grasslands, which contain remnant River Red Gums and native Kangaroo Grass. While the suburb lacks traditional residential "village" amenities, the creek corridor offers sections of the Merri Creek Trail for cyclists and walkers, providing a rare pocket of biodiversity amidst the surrounding warehouses.

Connectivity is the suburb's greatest logistical asset. Somerton sits at a critical junction of the Hume Highway (M31), the M80 Ring Road, and Somerton Road/Cooper Street. While it does not have an active passenger train station, it is well-serviced by the nearby Roxburgh Park and Upfield stations. The workforce is supported by key bus routes, including the SmartBus 901, which links Melbourne Airport to the southeastern suburbs. Its strategic position ensures that it remains a premier destination for the transport and warehousing sectors.

From a property perspective, Somerton is a specialized industrial investment market where residential sales are almost non-existent. The real estate landscape is defined by high-value warehouse acquisitions and the development of state-of-the-art logistics facilities. With the completion of the Intermodal Terminal and ongoing improvements to the Port Rail Shuttle Network, Somerton has solidified its role as a critical gateway for freight in Victoria, maintaining record-low industrial vacancy rates and high demand from owner-occupiers in the logistics sector.
