Patterson Lakes is a unique and prestigious waterfront suburb located approximately 35 kilometres southeast of the Melbourne CBD. It is widely recognised as the "boating capital" of Victoria, defined by its extensive system of man-made canals, quiet lakes, and a world-class marina that provides many residents with direct water access from their own backyards.

The lifestyle in Patterson Lakes is intrinsically linked to its waterways. The suburb is divided into the "Tidal Waterways," consisting of canals and harbours with access to Port Phillip Bay, and the "Quiet Lakes" (Lakes Legana and Illawong), which are non-tidal and primarily used for canoeing and scenic views.

The Patterson Lakes Marina serves as a major regional hub, offering comprehensive boating facilities, fueling stations, and dry stack storage. Social life often centres around the Marina precinct and the Lakeview Shopping Centre, which features waterside dining, cafes, and specialty retail. For those who enjoy land-based recreation, the suburb is surrounded by extensive parklands, including the Patterson River trails and nearby Carrum Beach.
