ABOUT LEXTON

Lexton is a historic township nestled at the foothills of the Pyrenees Ranges, located approximately 45 kilometres north-west of Ballarat along the Sunraysia Highway.

It occupies a significant place in Victorian history as one of the earliest inland settlements in the colony, originally known as "Burnbank" due to its position on the banks of the Burnbank Creek. The town served as a vital crossroads for travelers and miners heading toward the Pyrenees and Avoca goldfields, eventually evolving into the administrative centre for the Shire of Lexton.

The character of Lexton is defined by its wide, quiet streets and a collection of substantial 19th-century buildings that reflect its former importance. The architecture is a blend of rugged bluestone and local brick, with landmarks such as the Lexton Public Hall, the historic schoolhouse, and the Gothic-style St Mary’s Anglican Church serving as focal points for the township. The town’s history as a major coaching stop is still evident in the presence of the Pyrenees Hotel, which has remained a social anchor for the district since the 1840s.

The landscape surrounding Lexton is striking and varied, characterized by the dramatic rise of the Pyrenees to the north and west. The region is a mosaic of open grazing country, predominantly used for sheep and wool production, and patches of native forest. Mount Direction and the surrounding granite hills provide a scenic backdrop, while the Burnbank Creek winds through the township, offering a green corridor of mature gums. This proximity to the hills makes Lexton a popular base for those exploring the nearby wineries and state forests.

Community life is tight-knit and centered on the town's recreation reserve, which hosts local football, netball, and cricket. The Lexton Highland Gathering, a long-standing tradition, highlights the area's Scottish pioneering roots and draws visitors from across the state. Today, Lexton remains a resilient and peaceful village, offering a quintessential country lifestyle where the heritage of the early squatters and the natural beauty of the Victorian "high country" converge.
