ABOUT LEARMONTH

Learmonth is a picturesque rural township located approximately 20 kilometres north-west of Ballarat along the Sunraysia Highway. Set on the northern shore of its namesake, Lake Learmonth, the town serves as a historic gateway to the Pyrenees wine region and is surrounded by an striking landscape of ancient volcanic hills and rich, red soil.

Originally established in 1837 and named after the pioneering Learmonth brothers, the town once served as the administrative headquarters for the Shire of Ballarat, a legacy still visible in its grand civic architecture.

The character of Learmonth is defined by its wide, tree-lined main street and a remarkably well-preserved collection of 19th-century buildings. The town features a range of significant heritage sites, including the former Ballarat Shire Offices—a majestic bluestone structure that now houses the local historical society—and several historic churches constructed from rough-hewn granite and local brick. An impressive Avenue of Honour, consisting of mature Dutch and English Elm trees, creates a grand entrance to the township and reflects the community's deep-seated respect for its local history and wartime contribution.

At the heart of the town’s recreational life is Lake Learmonth, a natural water body enhanced in the late 1800s that remains a premier destination for fishing, boating, and birdwatching. The foreshore is a communal hub, featuring picnic areas, walking trails, and a caravan park that draws visitors seeking a quiet escape. The surrounding environment is quintessentially Western District, characterized by gently rolling scoria cones and fertile plains that support a thriving agricultural industry focused on livestock and cropping.

Despite its proximity to the regional hub of Ballarat, Learmonth has successfully maintained a secluded, small-town atmosphere. The community is tight-knit and active, supported by local institutions like the historic Stag Hotel, a general store and cafe, and a range of sporting clubs including lawn bowls and Australian Rules football. It is a locality that prizes its "clean and green" reputation, offering a tranquil rural lifestyle where the heritage of the early pastoral era is carefully balanced with modern community life.
