ABOUT WESTMEADOWS

Westmeadows is a leafy, historic suburb in Melbourne’s north, located approximately 17 kilometres from the CBD. Often referred to as a "hidden gem," it retains a distinct "country town" feel despite its proximity to the city and Melbourne Airport.

Originally established in 1850 as the Broadmeadows Township, the suburb serves as a gateway to the north, offering a blend of heritage charm and modern family living within the City of Hume.

The lifestyle in Westmeadows is defined by its natural surroundings and historical roots. The suburb is nestled along the Moonee Ponds Creek, which features the extensive Moonee Ponds Creek Trail for walking and cycling. Residents enjoy an abundance of green space, with approximately 33% of the suburb dedicated to parks and reserves, including the Westmeadows Reserve and the Hillcrest Drive Reserve. The "Westmeadows Village" along Ardlie Street acts as the social heart of the community, featuring the historic Westmeadows Tavern (circa 1850s), local bakeries, and independent cafes. The area is known for its serene environment where native wildlife, particularly birds and kangaroos, are frequently sighted.

Education is a central pillar of the suburb, anchored by the historic Westmeadows Primary School, which has a rich history dating back over a century. The school is highly regarded for its inclusive environment and strong community connections. For early learning, the suburb offers the Westmeadows Community Children's Centre and Nido Early School. While there are no secondary schools within the immediate suburb boundaries, families have easy access to reputable institutions in neighbouring suburbs, such as Aitken College in Greenvale, Penola Catholic College in Broadmeadows, and Sirius College.

Connectivity is a major logistical advantage. Westmeadows is perfectly positioned for those requiring fast access to the Tullamarine Freeway and the M80 Ring Road, making commutes to the city or the airport (only 10 minutes away) highly efficient. While the suburb does not have its own train station, it is well-serviced by the nearby Broadmeadows and Jacana stations on the Craigieburn line, with several bus routes connecting residents to these transit hubs and the larger Broadmeadows Central shopping precinct.

Infrastructure and urban renewal are ongoing themes for the area. The Westmeadows Community Centre serves as a vital civic hub, hosting various community programs and social gatherings. The suburb has recently benefited from the broader "Victoria's Big Build" projects, including road improvements that have enhanced traffic flow in the northern corridor. Heritage preservation remains a priority, with several landmarks like the old bluestone bridge and the former shire offices being maintained as reminders of the suburb's administrative history as the original centre of the Shire of Broadmeadows.

From a property perspective, Westmeadows is a resilient and stable market characterised by a very high owner-occupation rate. The housing stock is incredibly diverse, ranging from character-filled 19th-century bluestone cottages and mid-century weatherboards to large, modern double-storey family homes on generous allotments. The suburb's limited size and protected green belts ensure that it remains a tightly held and sought-after enclave for families seeking space and a sense of history without sacrificing urban convenience.
