ABOUT DANDENONG

Dandenong is a major metropolitan activity centre and the "second capital" of Melbourne, located approximately 29 kilometres southeast of the CBD. As a key gateway between the city and Gippsland, it is one of Victoria’s most culturally diverse and economically significant regions.

The suburb is currently at the heart of the massive Revitalising Central Dandenong project, a multi-decade initiative that has already attracted over $700 million in private investment to transform the area into a vibrant, 18-hour city hub.

The lifestyle in Dandenong is defined by its vibrant multiculturalism and world-class retail. The Dandenong Market, established in 1866, remains the heartbeat of the community, hosting over 200 traders and 150 nationalities under one roof. It is a premier destination for authentic street food, fresh produce, and unique hard-to-find ingredients. Social life is further enriched by the Afghan Bazaar and Little India precincts, which offer some of Melbourne's most authentic cultural dining and shopping experiences. For recreation, the Dandenong Creek Trail provides a scenic green corridor for walking and cycling, while the iconic Drum Theatre, housed in the historic 1890 Town Hall, serves as a major regional centre for the performing arts.

Major infrastructure works are currently reshaping the suburb in late 2025. Construction is underway on the first stage of a $600 million redevelopment by the Dandenong transport hub, which will deliver a new supermarket, a food market hall, and 470 new dwellings. Significant road upgrades are also reaching completion, including the $12.6 million Stud Road and Mcfees Road intersection upgrade, which has added new traffic lights, shared user paths, and a dedicated footpath to Dandenong Stadium. Additionally, the Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art is slated for completion by the end of 2025, providing a modern new cultural landmark for the city centre.

Education and healthcare are major regional pillars for the suburb. Dandenong Hospital is one of Melbourne's major acute facilities, serving as a specialist referral centre for the entire southeast. The suburb is well-served by schools such as Dandenong High School, St John’s Regional College, and various primary options like Dandenong Primary and St Mary’s. The suburb’s role as an "employment and innovation cluster" is supported by its massive industrial base in Dandenong South, which provides thousands of jobs and makes the region a critical engine room for Victoria’s manufacturing and logistics sectors.

From a property perspective, Dandenong is a high-growth market that offers strong value compared to the broader Melbourne average. The housing stock is diversifying rapidly, with original post-war brick homes on large allotments being joined by modern townhouses and high-density apartment complexes near the station. With a growing professional workforce and a multi-billion dollar revitalisation pipeline, Dandenong continues to attract significant interest from both first-home buyers and yield-focused investors.
