Easter is a time for family, travel, and long weekend getaways—but it’s also one of the most dangerous times to be on the road in Australia. Every year, the Easter holiday period sees a spike in accidents and fatalities, with fatigue, speed, and poor decision-making playing a major role.

In 2024, more than 20 lives were lost nationwide during the Easter break. While this number may seem like just another statistic, behind every figure is a person who didn’t make it home—and a family changed forever.

The roads are busier than usual during Easter, and many drivers travel long distances after work or in the early hours, when concentration is low and fatigue sets in. Add in unpredictable weather, increased traffic, and the occasional reckless driver, and the risk multiplies.

So what can you do?

  • Rest before you drive, and take regular breaks—at least every two hours.
  • Stick to the speed limit, no matter how tempting it is to make up time.
  • Avoid distractions, especially mobile phones. Even glancing down for a second can have deadly consequences.
  • Don’t drive under the influence, even if it’s “just a couple.”

If you're heading away this Easter, give yourself extra time. The goal isn’t just to get there—it’s to get there safely.

Let’s not make safety an afterthought. Every decision behind the wheel matters. Slow down, stay alert, and let this Easter be remembered for all the right reasons.
